Wrong. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a destructive, chronic condition that can severely damage your oral health. But not only that, gum disease has been linked to a variety of whole body health conditions that impact quality of life and may even shorten the length of it. Gum disease is also the leading cause of adult tooth loss. It’s a serious condition with serious consequences.

Gum Disease Symptoms
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. In this phase, symptoms may be few or non-existent. Many people with gingivitis will notice that their gum tissue looks a bit red and/or puffy. They may notice some bleeding when they brush or floss. Symptoms that indicate gum disease is progressing include:
● Teeth that appear to have loosened or shifted a bit
● Pus along the gumline
● Bad breath that won’t go away
● Gum tissue shrinkage (called recession)
● Dentures or a bridge that doesn’t seem to fit right anymore
Gum Disease Treatments
Here’s some good news: gingivitis can be cured with a thorough dental cleaning at our office and good follow-up home care. More advanced cases of gum disease can’t be cured, but they can be managed to minimize symptoms and renew gum health. Treatments include deep dental cleanings and oral antibiotic therapy. We’ll keep close tabs on you during treatment to make sure that things are heading in the right direction. The doctor will also let you know how frequently you need to schedule follow-up appointments. (Most folks require six-month cleanings and checkups. If you’ve got gum disease, we’ll want to see you on a more frequent basis.)
Gum disease that has progressed to its most advanced stage, called periodontitis, may require surgery to repair the damage to tooth, bone, and gum tissue.
